Hepatitis A Vaccine Hepatitis B Vaccine
Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Transmitted primarily by the faecal-oral route, that is, when an uninfected person contacts or ingests objects, food or water that has been contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. Hepatitis B is a type of hepatitis and is caused by the Hepatitis B virus. It is estimated that about 8% of the Hong Kong population are carriers. The hepatitis B virus is present in blood and body fluids such as saliva, semen, vaginal secretion, other body secretions and mother-to-baby transmission.
Hepatitis A infection does not cause chronic liver disease and is rarely fatal, but it can cause debilitating symptoms and fulminant hepatitis (acute liver failure), which is associated with high fatality rates. An estimated 25% of hepatitis B carriers will progress to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis or liver cancer.
The hepatitis A vaccine is safe and effective in preventing infection. Individuals at high risk can consult doctor about vaccination to protect their health. The Hong Kong Government provides free immunisation to newborns, but the antibody level may decrease over time. If the blood test results show that you do not have 'hepatitis B antigen' and inadequate 'hepatitis B antibody in your body, you can consider having a vaccine injection. You can consult a doctor for advice before getting the vaccine.
