13 - Valent Pneumococcal Vaccine

One of the bacteria that causes bacterial pneumonia is pneumococcus. Pneumococcus can be present in healthy carriers. 9,832 people were died of pneumonia in 2021, number of deaths has increased by more than twice over the past 20 years, more deadly than heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. The condition of invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) is usually worse among young children and elderly. Pneumococcal vaccination is one of the most effective means of preventing pneumococcal diseases. You should talk to your doctor to find out if you need to be vaccinated against pneumococcal disease.

Active immunisation for the prevention of disease caused by 13 serotypes of Strep pneumoniae (For instance pneumonia, acute otitis media, and invasive disease including meningitis & bacteremia).

How:

Subcutaneous or Intramuscular Injection (preferably in the deltoid muscle or lateral mid-thigh)

 

According to the advice from the Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme (HKCIP) recommended by the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases of the Centre for Health Protection, Department of Health:

- Newborns: 3 doses in total; receive 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV13) primary series at 2 and 4 months and a booster dose at 12 months.

- Aged 1 to 6 years and below: a single dose of PCV13 catch-up vaccination should be provided to children who have not completed the primary series or received any booster dose of PCV13.     

- High-risk individuals* aged 2 years or above: receive a single dose of PCV13, followed by a single dose of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (23vPPV) 1 year later.

For elderly 65 years of age and older without high-risk conditions*: either a single dose of PCV13 or a single dose of 23vPPV.

* High-risk conditions include:

  1. History of invasive pneumococcal disease;
  2. Immunocompromised states:
    - Asplenia, HIV /AIDS, primary immunodeficiency
    - Immunodeficiencies related to malignancies and transplantation
    - Immunodeficiencies related to use of immunosuppressive drugs / systemic steroid
  3. Chronic disease
    - Chronic cardiac, pulmonary, liver, or renal disease
    - Diabetes mellitus or cerebrospinal fluid leakage
  4. With cochlear implants

(Essential hypertension per se is not considered as a high-risk condition)

  2. Doctor's consultation is included prior to the first dose of vaccine. If customer is assessed to be not suitable for vaccination, the fee will be refunded subject to a deduction of doctor’s consultation fee at HK$300.
  3. The product is not applicable to Vaccination Subsidy Scheme.
  4. This vaccination service is applicable to persons aged 6 weeks or above.
  5. Persons aged below 18 MUST be accompanied by their parents/legal guardians, who will sign on the consent form on behalf of the enrolees in the clinic.
  6. Quality HealthCare will contact the customer in around 5 working days after the date of payment for appointment arrangement.
  7. This vaccination is only available at designated Quality HealthCare Medical Centre(s) as shown above.
  8. Customers must present their identity cards and order confirmation letter (printed or e-version) on the appointment day for verification.
  9. This vaccination service will be valid for 6 months starting from the date of payment. Customer must redeem and complete the relevant vaccination within the 6 months’ period.
  10. Save and except for the circumstance as stipulated under Clause 1 above, no amendment or refund to the service ordered is allowed once payment is confirmed. All services cannot be resold, transferred, or used for commercial purposes without explicit written consent of Quality HealthCare.
  11. In case of disputes, the decision of Quality HealthCare Medical Services Limited shall be final.
