The number of influenza cases surges during its peak season every year. Together with the resurgence of COVID-19 over and over, medical service supplies will be foreseeably in shortage this year. It is recommended that children and students receive seasonal influenza vaccination to reduce the admission rates and severe or death cases brought by influenza-associated complications. In addition, the apparent symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza are similar. Both illnesses cause respiratory tract diseases and may exhibit fever, runny nose and sore throat. Parents should stay alert because they will find it challenging to distinguish between COVID-19 and influenza merely by the clinical symptoms

By looking to loosen their anti-epidemic measures for COVID-19, governments around the world intend to attract both inbound and domestic travellers. Recently the Hong Kong government's policy is also heading in this direction. It’s time for adults to get flu shots and be well-prepared for avoiding influenza and COVID-19 co-infection so that we can protect our relatives and friends.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent seasonal influenza and associated complications, people aged 6 months or above are advised to receive seasonal influenza vaccination. Children under 9 years of age who have never received such vaccination before are recommended to receive 2 doses of seasonal influenza vaccination in the 2022-2023 season.

New influenza strains appear from time to time and at irregular intervals. As the vaccine composition is updated every year in accordance with the circulating strains, it is suggested that people should receive seasonal influenza vaccination annually. After vaccination, it takes around two weeks for the body to develop antibodies to prevent the disease. Therefore, the seasonal influenza vaccine should be given at least two weeks before the beginning of influenza season for proper protection during the influenza season.

The quadrivalent influenza vaccines (Northern Hemisphere winter disease) recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the 2022-2023 season contain the following:
